What is musical theatre dance?
Musical Theatre in a dance sense is a style rooted in the history of Broadway Theatre performance.
The style exists in the intersection between choreography and written text, whether that be dialogue or sung lyric. The styles you may find within musical theatre could include elements of jazz, ballet, tap, street and folk and will use the appropriate style to best communicate the story.
Musical theatre dance is all about embodying the character within the show and telling a story through your dance.
You may be familiar with theatrical shows such as West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof or Chicago, all of which have a significant dance elements to them. The dance elements go hand in hand with the amazing songs to bring the story to life.
To go along with the the Broadway style choreography is the all important part of the costumes. Musical theatre often draws on striking costuming to communicate the story and character of a show. Musical theatre is sure to be a favourite at the RGD end of year Dance Show!
Why take musical theatre dance?
For anybody wanting to grow in their performance abilities and developing their acting chops, Musical theatre is an excellent style to train in.
Most High Schools run musical theatre productions each year, and with a background in musical theatre dance and singing you will have confidence to take on the challenge of a role in your production.
We believe its important to be able to offer both the dance component as well as singing tuition and for that reason Musical Theatre classes at RGD will be taught by Caitlin Walker and her sister Liz.
Caitlin will focus on Musical Theatre dance while her sister Liz is a professionally trained singer. Together they will bring their years experience to deliver some amazing classes for our students.
RGD Studios Musical Theatre Dance classes start in Term 3 of 2022.
Class times are:
Monday: 5:15 - 6:00pm - Level 3 (year 4 and 5)
Monday: 6:00 - 6:45pm - Level 5 (year 6 and 7)
Thursday: 3.30 - 4.15pm - Level 2 (year 2 and 3)
Thursday: 6.45 - 7.30pm - Level 7 (year 8 and 9)
