What is a competitive dance crew?
A crew is a team of dancers who train together all year and perform at dance competitions across New Zealand and some internationally. At RGD we run elite and development Hip Hop crews from our St Johns studio, grouped by age and experience so every dancer is challenged at the right level.
How much commitment is involved?
Crew dancers attend a weekly crew trainings on top of their regular technique classes, with extra rehearsals in the lead-up to competition season. Costume and entry fees apply, and families need to keep competition weekends free. We share the calendar at the start of the year so you can plan around it.
What actually happens at a dance competitions?
Expect an early start, hair and makeup in a shared team space, a warm-up, then two to three minutes on stage. Judges score on timing, technique, formations, showmanship and overall impact. Results come at the end of the section, and there's usually time to watch other studios — which is half the fun and a big part of how dancers improve.
Is competitive dance right for my child?
Crews suit dancers who love being in the studio, take corrections well and want to be part of a team. The benefits go well beyond trophies: resilience, discipline, stage confidence and friendships that last for years. It isn't about being the most naturally gifted dancer in the room — it's about turning up, working hard and backing your teammates.
How to join an RGD crew
Crew placements happen through auditions towards the end of each year. We have seperate auditions for development and elite crews. All are welcome to audition in this exciting part of our studio.
